Scared to Life

It was a routine doctors visit, while waiting for the doctor I noticed a flier for a complimentary mammogram. Normally these types of events are reserved for women 40 and over, however, this event had no age limit. Determined to be pro-active and wanting to flaunt my prevention prowess, I decided to call and schedule a mammogram.
Oh Boy! I had never been squeezed and construed in such a way. It was an uncomfortable yet painless process.
And I forgot about it, until one day when the mail arrived. Not expecting anything out of the ordinary I read the letter, and was frozen. Thanksgiving Eve, I was informed that there were two masses found on my breast. Unfreaking believable! I have personally known at least two friends who have triumphed over this disease, but I wasn’t them. I did not want to be a spokesperson, advocate, survivor or victim of this disease. The reality of just how fragile life can be smacked me face

.
This moment truly changed my life. It was at this moment that I knew that my destiny could no longer wait. Out of this time, The DIVA Movement came to life. I no longer could wait for the right time, the right financing, the right headquarters, or the right people. I could not die knowing that I lived without pursing my dreams and purpose.
Thankfully, the masses were benign. But it helped me to understand how important early detection could be.
“Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save many thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests. Following the American Cancer Society’s guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that breast cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage and treated successfully”(www.cancer.org)

Black Woman Redefined: Dispelling Myths and Discovering Fulfillment in the Age of Michelle Obama bySophia Nelson

Stereotypes aren’t funny when they follow you everywhere.
This is the rallying cry that author Sophia A. Nelson wants all of America to grapple with when it comes to the way we view and treat black women.
Black Woman Redefined was inspired in part by what Nelson calls open season on accomplished black women,” which reached a tipping point in 2007 when Don Imus referred to black female Rutger’s University basketball co-eds as nappy-headed hos.” Since then, we’ve seen First Lady Michelle Obama caricatured on the infamous New Yorker cover, when she was called angry” and unpatriotic”; the 2009 groundbreaking Yale University Study on professional black women titled, Marriage Eludes High-Achieving Black Women”; ABC’s Why Can’t a Successful Black Woman Find a Man?” and the Internet video that went viral, Black Marriage Negotiations,” featuring a successful black woman interviewing a nice black man to be her mate in a robotic, controlling, emasculating, Bible-thumping demeanor. More recently, we were subjected to the 2011 Super Bowl commercial that started a national firestorm featuring an angry black woman” throwing a soda can at her mate, after first kicking, slapping, and emasculating him.
Nelson says black women are tired of such depictions that portray them as manless, childless, angry, and unfulfilled. Nelson sets out to change this cultural perception, taking readers on a no-holds-barred journey into the hearts and minds of accomplished black women to reveal truths, tribulations, and insights like never before.
She says it is time for a REDEFINITION among black women in America.

Peace from Broken Pieces by Iyanla Vanzant
New York Times “best-selling author Iyanla Vanzant recounts the last decade of her life and the spiritual lessons learned–from the price of success during her meteoric rise as a TV celebrity on Oprah, the “Iyanla” TV show (produced by Barbara Walters), to the dissolution of her marriage and her daughter’s 15 months of illness and death on Christmas day. Weaving a brilliant latticework of family legend, loss, and love, Téa Obreht, the youngest of The New Yorker’s twenty best American fiction writers under forty, has spun a timeless novel that will establish her as one of the most vibrant, original authors of her generation.

The Tiger’s Wife

byTéa Obreht
In a Balkan country mending from years of conflict, Natalia, a young doctor, arrives on a mission of mercy at an orphanage by the sea. By the time she and her lifelong friend Zóra begin to inoculate the children there, she feels age-old superstitions and secrets gathering everywhere around her. Secrets her outwardly cheerful hosts have chosen not to tell her. Secrets involving the strange family digging for something in the surrounding vineyards. Secrets hidden in the landscape itself. But Natalia is also confronting a private, hurtful mystery of her own: the inexplicable circumstances surrounding her beloved grandfather’s recent death. After telling her grandmother that he was on his way to meet Natalia, he instead set off for a ramshackle settlement none of their family had ever heard of and died there alone. A famed physician, her grandfather must have known that he was too ill to travel. Why he left home becomes a riddle Natalia is compelled to unravel.Grief struck and searching for clues to her grandfather’s final state of mind, she turns to the stories he told her when she was a child. On their weeklytrips to the zoo he would read to her from a worn copy of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, which he carried with him everywhere; later, he told her stories of his own encounters over many years with “the deathless man,” a vagabond who claimed to be immortal and appeared never to age. But the most extraordinary story of all is the one her grandfather never told her, the one Natalia must discover for herself. One winter during the Second World War, his childhood village was snowbound, cut off even from the encroaching German invaders but haunted by another, fierce presence: a tiger who comes ever closer under cover of darkness. “These stories,” Natalia comes to understand, “run like secret rivers through all the other stories” of her grandfather’s life. And it is ultimately within these rich, luminous narratives that she will find the answer she is looking for.

In the Time of the Butterflies

Set during the waning days of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic in 1960, this extraordinary novel tells the story the Mirabal sisters, three young wives and mothers who are assassinated after visiting their jailed husbands. From the author of How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents comes this tale of courage and sisterhood set in the Dominican Republic during the rise of the Trujillo dictatorship. A skillful blend of fact and fiction, In the Time of the Butterflies is inspired by the true story of the three Mirabal sisters who, in 1960, were murdered for their part in an underground plot to overthrow the government. Alvarez breathes life into these historical figures–known as “las mariposas,” or “the butterflies,” in the underground–as she imagines their teenage years, their gradual involvement with the revolution, and their terror as their dissentience is uncovered.Alvarez’s controlled writing perfectly captures the mounting tension as “the butterflies” near their horrific end.  The novel begins with the recollections of Dede, the fourth and surviving sister, who fears abandoning her routines and her husband to join the movement. Alvarez also offers the perspectives of the other sisters: brave and outspoken Minerva, the family’s political ringleader; pious Patria, who forsakes her faith to join her sisters after witnessing the atrocities of the tyranny; and the baby sister, sensitive Maria Teresa, who, in a series of diaries, chronicles her allegiance to Minerva and the physical and spiritual anguish of prison life.

The Help byKathryn Stockett

Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step.
Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.
Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.
Minny, Aibileen’s best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody’s business, but she can’t mind her tongue, so she’s lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.
Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.
In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women – mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends – view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don’t.

Diva Moment Series:So You’ve Got a Big Ego

Many of us have experienced them. The moment when you realize that you are actually throwing a temper tantrum. The moment you realize that everyone must have forgotten that the world revolves around you. The moment you realize that you aren’t actually a princess and everyone around you are your subjects. That’s right ladies, that moment is called a “DIVA Moment”. Let me start by saying that I believe that everyone is a queen, a crown jewel, a treasure and a prize. So I believe that a woman’s life should reflect all of these characteristics. However, we must do it with class, style and compassion.

So who’s up first? The iconic DIVA of film and music, Ms. Diana Ross. Ms. Ross’ infamous DIVA moments have gone on to inspire movies like “Dreamgirls”. These DIVA moments span many years and resulted in the breakup of a successful female group and the launching of a profitable solo career.

Diana Ross, born Diana Earl, grew up as poverty-stricken and sickly child who struggled with a lifelong battle to get noticed. Who after being invited to join a singing group by her friend quickly becomes a rising star on the Motown record label. It became apparent that Diana Ross was not satisfied as an ordinary member of the group. Her ego began to grow and eventually resulted in the demise of this iconic group. As her ego became more inflated she began making outlandish demands. She demanded that everyone divert their eyes when she entered the room. She required that her dressing room color scheme match her eye color. At one point in her career she had 42 secretaries attending to her. She was eventually labeled as a “tyrant” among many concert promoters and producers.

What are the signs of an over-inflated ego?
Do you seek acceptance to the point that it interferes with your success?
Do you constantly see people as your rival and try to think about how you can “beat “them?
Do you criticize others prematurely and discard them as being unimportant?
Are you easily offended when you face opposition or resistance?
If you answered yes to most of these questions, you may be an ego-maniac. But guess what?
There’s Help! Here are some ways to keep your ego in check.
Begin to develop a healthy “ego”

Genuine confidence is not haughty and does not have to “prove” itself. It is balanced. It provides a sense of accomplishment and success while helping you to remember that you are not perfect.
Be Humble
Humility has often been viewed as a weakness, but it is actually a necessary ingredient in the recipe for success. In Jim Collins book Good to Great, humility was one of only two characteristics he discovered that separated leaders capable of leading good performing companies, and leaders who made their companies great performers.

Appreciate Others                                                                                         We have all heard of the saying “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar”, which means you can make more friends by being nice than by being rude.  People want to feel appreciated, valued and respected.  I had a supervisor who never forgot my birthday.  She always prepared a gift or a meal for me to enjoy on my special day. Because she showed her appreciation, how much harder do you think that I worked for her?  A little show of appreciation goes a long way.

Let the Journey Begin!

In my last post, I provided a few suggestions on how to begin planning a trip. I have actually used the ideas that were listed when planning my trips. I understand that even when given a map, it can be difficult arriving at the intended destination. Therefore, I have decided to have you follow me on a trip- planning journey from beginning to end. You will have a front row seat to closely view every aspect of trip-planning; hopefullygathering information along the way that will assist you in planning your next vacation.

image

To begin, I have decided that my next trip will take place in South America and will include moderately strenuous activities such as hiking, diving, and lots of walking. The time of year has yet to be determined, but I suspect the length of my stay will be around 21-27 days. For this trip, I have decided to work with a company that specializes in personalized South American tours with the hope that they can fullyaccommodate my needs.

I will start my process by visiting a couple of websites including the U.S. Department of State, TripAdvisor, and Frommer’s. Since political instability is on the rise internationally, I want to first make sure my intended destination is not on the ‘TravelWarnings’ list created by the U.S. government. Next, I will utilize TripAdvisor andFrommer’s to review tour agencies, dive shops, and ‘things to do’/’places to visit’ to get an idea of activities offered. Another good place to start is in the “travel” sectionof your favorite bookstore. There are plenty of publications that distribute travel guides that are up to date with useful information. Frommer’s, Fodor’s, and Lonely Planet are a few that I like to use. Lastly, I will purchase a map of South America to get a better idea of the geographic locations, including countries, major cities, and overall topography of the land (features such as mountains, bodies of waters, highways, etc.)

So, are you ready? Here we go!

Is Your Glass Always Half Empty?

I recently started a 24 day health challenge.  This challenge is designed to improve my stamina, metabolism and health.  The challenge begins with a 10-day cleanse.  During this time, I was given a list of all of the foods to avoid and a list of foods that would aid in my progress during the cleanse.

After discussing my newly adopted lifestyle with a friend, I began to realize something about our conversation.  I only talked about the things that I couldn’t have.  I talked about how much I missed coffee in the morning, my favorite pie or my beloved French fries.  I neglected to realize that the list of what I could have was much bigger than the foods that I should avoid.

How many times in life, do we focus on what we lack instead of thinking about what we already possess?
Perception is everything.   How you perceive your failure, success, goals, dreams, purpose and passion-directly affects how you will deal with it and ultimately makes all of the difference.

Emotions have a tremendous impact on our perception.  And emotions are often based on our thoughts. People respond to what appears to them to be true and this belief, whether it is true or not, often becomes your reality.
Here are a few things that I do to help put things into proper perspective:

Rest and Wait.  Many bad decisions or choices come because you are stressed and not a rest.  Your mid is going a million miles an hour and your body is drained.  Never make a major decision when you are tired.

Get advice. Ask trusted friends, family members or mentors for advice.  Avoid talking with negative people about your situation.

Watch your thoughts.  Your thoughts become words that can affect your emotions.  Imprison any negative thoughts that might distort your perspective.

Avoid Making this Common Relationship Mistake

By Nikki Ransom-Alfred

Did you know that when you are first falling in love, our blood levels of serotonin are almost the same as those with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder? As time goes by and our levels of serotonin begin to baseline, we may find that we aren’t as “obsessed” with our partners as we once were. The reality and the responsibilities of day-to-day life can also cause us to not put in all the extra effort and attentiveness into our partners like we once did at the beginning of our relationship. This common relationship mistake happens all of the time resulting in partners that can end up with feelings of being unloved, resentment, unattractive, ignored or worse…wanting to leave the relationship!

Do not make the very common relationship mistake of taking your partner for granted!

Maintaining the romance, love, and positive feelings in any relationship should be a constant and consistent habit for both partners. Every day you should tell or express to your partner know how much value they bring to your life, how happy they make you, appreciation for that they do, and how loved they make you feel. This can be done with a simple “Thank you” and big smile; greeting them with a hug and kiss; a loving note left in their drawer; being their biggest cheerleader and friend; bringing home their favorite treat; giving them a nice back rub; the list of ways to express “I adore and value you” can go on and on!

Begin to make it a habit of yours to always let your partner know just how much you love and value them and see the positive effects that it has in all aspects of your relationship and marriage!

So You Want To Travel?

By Naya Ross

When thinking about taking a trip, the thought of where to begin planning can be somewhat daunting. I mean everything from trying to figure out where you want to go; and what to do once you get there. After investing the necessary time and energy researching a destination and all its’ possibilities, you will NEED a vacation!  I am aware that travel agencies and tour companies offer packaged deals, and I admit that I have yet to purchase one, which is not to say I never will; I just haven’t yet.

The enormity of planning a vacation can be intimidating; like Martin challenging Thomas ‘The Hit Man’ Hearns to a fight! Planning a vacation will not leave you bruised and battered but ready to get on the next thing smokin’!! The biggest question is, ‘Where do I begin?’ To start, I suggest the following:

1.) Pick out where you want to go. After selecting where you want to go, you’ll need to know when. When to go is important for looking into activities. You’ll want to make sure the weather is good for what you are trying to do.

2.) What kind/type of vacation/trip you are wanting (i.e. relaxing, adventure, etc.)

3.) The length of stay/time of year. You may want to have an idea on how long you are plan to stay and if it is ‘high’ or ‘low’ season (this can greatly influence the price).

I also suggest that you keep a travel journal/book to write in and keep everything in one place.

Planning a trip does not have to be stressful or scary, in fact it can be very exciting!! As you discover information about your destination, you are learning about a new place and a new culture! I invite you to consider planning your own vacation. It will be fun, exhilarating, and interesting!

Are you ready to explore the world?

I am a Martin fan! Check out this clip!
